Portland Pie Golf Tournament

On Monday, August 9, Portland Pie held their 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at the Woodlands in Falmouth, Maine. The tournament was held in memorium of  Ryan Fitzpatrick, an active volunteer for MHS who passed away last year.

Portland Pie partnered with Maine Handicapped Skiing for the event and donated all the money raised to Maine Handicapped Skiing.

This year’s tournament had 36 foursomes, whereas the year before there were only 28.

Hole sponsors included Michaud Distributors, General Mills, VOLK Packaging Corp, SYSCO, Portland Phoenix, Tyson Foods, Noyes, Hall & Allen Insurance, Pepsi, Shipyard Brewing Company, HireAlliance Staffing & Consulting, Katahdin Trust Company, It’ll Be Pizza, Great State Beverages, Glacial Energy, Filler and Associates, Performance Food Service and Source Pak.

The 17th hole gave golfers the chance to win $10,000 cash by hitting a hole in one. This was no easy feat and while a handful of golfers were close, no one made the hole in one shot.

Eric Topper, the MHS rep stationed at the 17th hole, was there to educate tournament teams about the Solo Rider, an adaptive golfcart that allows the user to play 18 holes of golf without placing strain on their legs. The money raised at last year’s Golf Tournament helped MHS purchase a Solo Rider for Toddy Brook Golf Course in Falmouth.

MHS is the largest year-round adaptive recreation program in the state of Maine for adults and children with physical disabilities. Over 400 volunteers assist our athletes in appreciating the joys and challenges of sports participation. To find out more visit their website, http://www.skimhs.org/index.php.
