Every pizza tells a story

As we continue through the long Maine winter, we thought it would be a good time to swing by and see our friends over at WinterKids in Westbrook as they prepare for their biggest event of the year - The Downhill 24 at Sugarloaf. Of course, we brought some pizza to help keep them fed and fueled up as they work hard to make this year’s event another great success.

Portland Pie Company is a proud supporter of WinterKids and the Downhill 24.

WinterKids is the only nonprofit in Maine dedicated to increasing outdoor physical activity in children and families during our longest, most sedentary season.

The Downhill 24 is Maine’s premier ski and snowboard challenge. Last year the event raised almost one million dollars.

Operating out of an office in Westbrook, the WinterKids staff is a small, close-knit group working together to make a huge impact for kids and families throughout the entire state of Maine.

WinterKids began in 1997 as part of the Ski Maine Association with a Learn to Ski program for fifth graders. In 2000, WinterKids became an independent non-profit and continues to develop and expand innovative health education programs for kids in the winter and year-round.

Winterkids school programs target high need, rural areas with the least access to resources. Their family programs target high-demand areas in close proximity to winter sports areas. The community events target high population areas with the greatest opportunity for broad messaging and impact on local outdoor activity.

WinterKids helps children develop healthy lifelong habits through education and fun, outdoor winter activity. They create opportunities for children to be active, vibrant and healthy in the outdoors.

WinterKids works tirelessly to create opportunities for thousands of kids across Maine to get outside and active in winter through innovative outdoor education and community programs.

EAT PIZZA. RAISE DOUGH.

As part of our ongoing support of WinterKids, each year we feature two pizzas on our Winter Seasonal Menu that directly support the organization. This year, one dollar from every Burnt Ends Pizza and Southwest Queso Pizza sold will be donated back to WinterKids and the Downhill 24.

BURNT ENDS PIZZA - A red sauce base topped with pork belly burnt ends, chipotle hot sauce scallions and our three cheese blend.

SOUTHWEST QUESO PIZZA - A queso cheese base topped with ground beef, green peppers, red onions and peppadew peppers. Finished with fresh cilantro and Southwest seasoning.

SUPPORT OUR DOWNHILL 24 TEAMS

We’ve got two teams headed up to Sugarloaf to participate in the Downhill 24 this year. Comprised of PPC staff, friends and family, we’re ready to hit the slopes and ski all night. Our SHREDDIN’ THE PIE LIFE team are the go-getters. They’re hungry and dangerous and ready to go. THE PPC CUTTERS are our junior team and a few other stragglers. They might be young but don’t count them out. Let’s hear it for the kids!

If you would like donate to either or both teams and help support WinterKids, please click on the logos below to visit our findraising pages. Thanks for your support!
